fpupdate - Error: Network - Could not resolve host
Posted by Finnbogi Finnbogason on 30/03/2016 10:27

Problem description:

The updater in F-PROT Antivirus for Linux/BSD/Solaris/AIX, named fpupdate, is unable to connect to the update servers for obtaining virus signature updates.
Output is: Error: Network - Could not resolve host

Possible solution:
Doing an DNS lookup for fprot{1..5}.ctmail.com will present to you all the IP addresses related to downloading F-PROT Antivirus definition updates. For F-PROT's updater to work properly, you need to make sure that the updater (fpupdate) is allowed to contact these IP addresses.

Example using the command host:

[~] for d in {1..5}; do host fprot$d.ctmail.com; done

... has address 213.220.100.1
... has address 84.39.153.39
... has address 84.39.152.39
... has address 216.163.176.32
... has address 103.243.111.32
... has address 38.113.116.1932

Example using the command nslookup:

user@glundur:~$ for d in {1..5}; do nslookup fprot$d.ctmail.com; done | grep -A 1 Name

Name: avdl.1.geo.ctmail.com
Address: 84.39.153.39
--
Name: avdl.2.geo.ctmail.com
Address: 84.39.152.39
--
Name: avdl.3.geo.ctmail.com
Address: 216.163.176.32
--
Name: avdl.4.geo.ctmail.com
Address: 38.113.116.193
--
Name: avdl.5.geo.ctmail.com
Address: 216.163.188.32
