Updating the virus signature file
Posted by - NA - on 19/03/2013 10:10
The virus signature file provides F-PROT Antivirus with all the necessary information, including what to search for and how to disinfect the virus. New version of the virus signature file is issued regularly to response to any new emerging threats. Therefore, to be able to provide your computer the best antivirus protection available today you must make sure the program is running the latest virus signature file.
All users of F-PROT Antivirus with a current subscription are entitled to free virus signature file updates for the duration of the subscription period.
F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Home updates the virus signature files automatically via the Internet and proxy server without user interaction. For further information, see How to set up automatic updates.
F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate, Internet Update package
The Internet Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate updates the virus signature files automatically via the Internet and proxy server without user interaction. For further information, see How to set up automatic updates.
F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate, LAN Update package
The LAN Update package will be installed on all client workstations and then there has to be at least one computer (server) on the network with F-PROT Antivirus for Windows, Internet Update package, installed (see below).
On the client workstations, specify the shared update location. This can be done either during or after the installation. If this is done after the installation, do one of the following:
Note: Please make sure that the F-PROT Antivirus service on the client machine (running in system account) has access to the shared update location (see "Setting Security and Access").
To update the virus signature file for the LAN Update package
An administrator must copy the latest virus signature file (antivir.def) from the Internet Update package to the shared update location from where the clients computers can update their local copies.
To update the settings files for the LAN Update package
If program settings for all client computers must be suitable for the network environment, the administrator may set his/her local copy of F-PROT Antivirus with the desired settings and then copy the settings files to the shared update location. The settings files are the following:
Both the settings files and “antivir.def” are located at
<CommonApplicationData>\FRISK Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows\
Where, <CommonApplicationData>, returns a path of "Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data". Please note that the path can be slightly different with other language versions of Windows. See examples below (assuming that F-PROT Antivirus was installed on C: drive):
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FRISK Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows\
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users\Anwendungsdaten\FRISK Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows\
A script can be created to automate the copying of the virus signature file (antivir.def) and settings files to the update location and then schedule it to run regularly, e.g. hourly. For further information, see "How to create a script to automate the copying of files".
The updating instructions for F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Mail Servers is similar to the F-PROT Antivirus for Corporate. Please see the Corporate version above.
